Final Thoughts of Fast food Crave

We are coming to a close to our blog. We thank everyone who has taken the time to read what we had to say. We definitely had fun writing about fast food and reading interesting circumstances of other fast food companies. something that we have learned was that managing a blog was not easy as we thought it would be. We had to do a lot of external research before we posted the blogs. but this was a good learning experience that we will take with us in our future endeavors. Thanks again

Customers were not happy with the taste of Dominoes pizzas. I will be discussing what Dominoes has done to change their reputation in a positive sense.

History of Burger King with advertising

Burger King has attempted a number of successful and unsuccessful advertisements. Burger King was the first in the fast food industry to use competitive ads. The theme of this advertisement was that Burger Kings burgers were larger and better tasting than their main competitor, McDonalds. In response, McDonalds sued Burger King in 1980 and they had not compromised a settlement until 2001.

In-N-Out--Fast Food Experiences

The first time I ate a burger at In-N-Out was during my San Diego vacation. I was told that In-N-Out burger is the most delicious hamburger in California. The burger looks like “open laugh” because of the hamburger shape. I was driven by curiosity and decided to go and try it. The popularity of the In-N-Out restaurant is beyond my imagination. There were the long queues whether it is driving through or inside of the restaurant.

The Taco Bell Meat is Partially Good

Taco Bell is well known to serve people Mexican fast food. They have blessed customers with creative menu items such as the Gordita Supreme, 5 Layer Burrito (my favorite burrito), Crunchwrap Supreme, Beefy Nacho Burrito Grillers, and their most recent promotion, Cool Ranch Locos Tacos. A majority of Taco Bell's products contains seasoned ground beef. Taco Bell has previously promoted to consumers that their beef is pure 100% beef.  But for critics, the 100% beef  campaign is false advertisement. The meat is actually a mixture of binders, extenders, and filler compounds. Wit that said, Taco Bell's so called '100% beef ' does not even meet the minimum requirements that are strictly enforced by the Department of Agriculture. The Alabama Law firm, Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis and Miles is suing the YUM Brand Chain for False Advertisement.

History of In and Out

Within the In and Out website, you can see a historical timeline of the In and Out restaurants. I like the timeline because it provides an understanding of the history and expansion of the In and Out brand. In this post, I am going to highlight some of the most important years and happenings for In and Out.

Franchising Not an Option for In and Out Burger

Our next focus of discussion will be about In and Out Burger. On February 25th, 2013, In and Out Burger president Lynsi Torres had made the announcement that she has decided not to expand her restaurants nationally. In and Out Burger restaurants are only opened in the western part of the US and spark controversy for those on the east side. There are two reasons why she has decided not to franchise.

Californian Hamburgers—In-N-Out

In-N-Out is a famous hamburger restaurant in California, but it is not well known in the state of Washington. In-N-Out restaurant was founded in 1948 by Harry Snyder and his wifeEsther. In California, most fast food customers would like to eat a hamburger in In-N-Out as their first choice. Although the In-N-Out restaurants have made a successful achievement in California, it has a very slow expansion to the other states. Now, In-N-out has a total of 281 stores in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Texas. In 2012, In-N-Out held a hamburger tasting activities in Hong Kong. This is the first time for In-N-Out to consider opening its global market.

Burger King’s Strategies

Burger King was the No. 2 burger chain before Wendy’s moved up. In order to reclaim its No. 2 position, Burger King has to apply to the new marketing strategy to rebuild its food menu. The new strategy helps Burger King increase 2.7 percent comparable-sales at the fourth quarter. The new menu adds the coffee and fresher foods choices. The good sales made Burger King decide to double its coffee choices in the next few weeks.

The startup and advertising strategy for Subway

Subway is one of the most popular chain restaurants for sub sandwiches. Subway was established by a 17 years old college student and his family friend Fred DeLuca and Peter Burk. He borrowed $1000 and opened the first shop in 1965. The first restaurant was located in Bridgeport, Connecticut and called Pete’s Super Submarines. Their long-term goal was to open 32 stores in 10 years. But in 1974, Fred and Peter had only 16 submarine sandwich shops established. At that point, Fred and Peter realized that they wouldn’t reach their target number of operational restaurants. To reach their goals and expand their brand name, Fred and Peter pursued the opportunity of franchising; launching the Subway brand.

Subway—Healthy Personal Life

Subway was founded in the state of Connecticut in 1965. The key determinant that drove to their fame was the production of 12-inches (30cm) and 6 inches (15cm) sub sandwiches. In modern times, Subway has opened 39,143 stores in 102 foreign countries. It is without question that Subway is the largest successful sandwich franchise organizations in the world. Subway is also the world’s second-largest single-brand fast food franchise chain. In addition, Subway has been recognized as the first global franchise in the top 500 franchise organizations by the United States “Entrepreneur” magazine. Subway has become one of the dominant market leaders in the fast food industry, both domestically and internationally.

Does 1 Inch Make a Difference?

In today's discussion, we are switching our focus from McDonald's to Subway for our next 3 discussions. In January of 2013, an Australian man named Matt Corby had used social media sites to spread negative press about the false advertisement of Subway's $5 Footlong promotional campaign. He had posted on Subway's Facebook page a picture of a 'supposed' Footlong sub that was measured to be 11 inches. Ever since he posted that comment on their Facebook page, over 100,000 Facebook users from all around the world have posted their own comments in response to this critic's comment. The content of the comments posted vary from those switching to Subway's direct competitors (i.e. Quiznos), users posting their own pictures of the measurement of a footlong sub, and users who believe that Matt is overreacting to the whole situation.

How fast food companies targets children and teens

Children:

Children are exposed to fast food marketing techniques through various forms of advertisements such as TV, the Internet, mobile phones, billboards and many others. Successful fast food companies target children with fun messages such as kid’s meal promotions and popular toy action figures. They use positive words such as “fun” and “cool.” Fast food companies often link these words with well known cartoons. On the Internet, kids can play in virtual games provided on the fast food chain website. The

KFC—global strategies

Yum! Brands is the largest restaurant group in the world. Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC, is the dominant subsidiary of Yum! Brands and what KFC’s product focus in the fast food industry is fried chicken. KFC is very successful in the fast food industry internationally. According to KFC official website description, “There are more than 15,000 KFC outlets in 105 countries and territories around the world”. In 2011, KFC’s sale revenue is around 15 million (Yum! Brands Annual Report). In my personal opinion, the key to KFC’s global success is accredited towards their global strategies.

Who is to Blame?

Citizens of Brazil are on the edge of their seats and holding in their breaths. Back in 2010, a manager of McDonald's sues the fast food power house for $17,500 in damages. In his 12 years of employment, he has gained 65lbs of pure fat, due to the persistent testing McDonald's quality of food and the benefits of free lunches given to employees. The final verdict granted the manager $17,500. Even though receiving compensatory damages may be gratifying, but internally, the manager still has to live the life as an overweight victim. Today's discussion is on obesity and how obesity affects children.

Our Thoughts on the Fast Food Industry

Hi everyone,

Jahleel Barnes: I am a senior and I am getting my Bachelors in Business Marketing at Pacific Lutheran University. My thoughts of the fast food industry are half and half. Yes I do believe that fast food is food that should not be consumed. At the same time, whenever you are craving for a late night snack and nowhere is open, fast food can be a beautiful thing. Consuming an abundance of preservatives and high amounts of fat is not good for the body. It is very sad to see obese adults and children consume fast food products. They always complain about their self-esteem issues and how they cannot control what they put into their body. Trust me, I know from past experience that you have all the power in the world to choose what you want to consume. It is also sad to see individuals who have to use a walking assistance apparatus such as a walker, a cane, or even an electric powered scooter just to travel places. What I'm trying to say is that it's not completely the fast food restaurant's fault for the way people choose to eat. Even though they do advertise fast food consistently, it's ultimately the consumer's own choice on whether to be influenced by the advertisement or not. So in closing, yes fast food does not provide any nutritional benefits. At the same time, it is the consumer's decision on whether they should consume fast food and if they decide to choose fast food, the frequency of the consumption of fast food is also left up to the consumer.

Stian Abrahamsen: I am a junior and I am a foreign exchange student from Norway; studying here at PLU pursuing my degree in International Marketing. Though I miss Norway, I am having a great time experiencing the culture here in America. One of the many things that I love about the American culture is the cheap fast food! Don’t get me wrong, we have fast food chains like McDonalds and Burger King in Norway, but they are much more expensive than here in America. In addition, there aren’t nearly as many of restaurants open in Norway compared to the United States either. Because fast food chains are so accessible, it is an easy choice for a quick meal in a busy day. The problem with the fast food is that so much of it is unhealthy, but the companies don’t focus on that aspect in their marketing of course. That is one of the sides I want to concentrate on in this blog.

Ding Jianying: I am a senior and I am getting my Bachelors in Business Marketing at PLU. The fast food business is the most popular career in the whole world. Based on the name fast food, we know it is the fast way to help people solve their inner feelings of hunger. We know those people need fast food because they do not have enough time to meet their physical needs. So the fast food’s biggest clients should be some middle generation. However, it is very easily to see many kids and young adults eat at the fast food kingpin, McDonald. It is an important strategy for fast food corporations to market to various demographics in a way that is the most appealing to those specific consumers. On the other hand, once we have satisfied our stomachs, we then recognize that the food we had just consumed is not the healthiest of choices. As more consumers incorporate healthy lifestyles in their lives, we begin to see more and more fast food restaurants focus their strategies on healthy eating, such as Subway. Subway is a fast food company without the deep-fried food. Providing healthier food to their customers is subway’s mission and it is popular in modern society. So healthy is another important strategy for fast food companies to consider. Different companies have various ways to attract their customers. According to the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, there are five basic needs of people. They are physiological, safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization. In my personal opinion, these needs are the most important elements for fast food companies to analyze in order to develop their companies to extend their market share.

Thank you for reading our blog. We would greatly appreciate if you could provide your insights of the fast food industry.
